Jaggery Block

The classic dhep — solid, golden, made for festival cooking.

No chemicalsNo additivesTraditionally madeFarm-sourced

The form your grandmother would recognise: a solid block of pure cane jaggery, poured hot from the pan and set. This is the jaggery for puran poli, chikki, gul poli and festival sweets, where you grate or melt exactly as much as the recipe asks. Unrefined and chemical-free, with the full mineral depth and dark caramel notes that only open-pan gur carries.

Origin · Sangli belt, Maharashtra

Poured and set the traditional way — no washing soda, no bleaching agents ever.

Why this jar earns its place

नैसर्गिक गोडवा · natural goodness

The dhep — jaggery as the pan made it

A block is jaggery at its most honest: poured hot from the open pan and set, nothing shaped, nothing standardised. All the minerals of the cane — iron, calcium, magnesium, potassium — set with it, along with the dark caramel notes only a wood-fired boil gives.

  • Unrefined whole-cane sweetness with its minerals intact
  • No washing soda, no bleaching — the colour is the cane's own
  • Grate or melt exactly as much as the recipe asks, keep the rest for months

आयुर्वेद · the ayurvedic view

Festival food was designed this way

Puran poli, tilgul, chikki — the festival sweets of this region are all built on gur, and Ayurveda explains why: jaggery is warming and nourishing, suited to the winter festivals it sweetens. The tradition chose its ingredient carefully; we just keep the ingredient worthy of it.

  • The traditional base of prasad and festival cooking
  • Warming by nature — made for Sankranti-season sweets
  • Aged blocks deepen in flavour the way the old kitchens preferred

रोजच्या वापरात · every day

For the recipes that ask for real gur

Keep a dhep in the tin for the cooking that powder can't do: melt it for chikki that snaps, grate it into puran, dissolve it dark and slow into kala chana ussal. A block keeps beautifully in an airtight tin away from moisture.
